LOWER TRACK; At least a slightly elevated roadbed (1/4″ Homasote from California Roadbed Co.) for typical mainline drainage. Code 83 flex track from Micro Engineering. Two colors of ballast with our #1152 Basalt (Empire Builder) for the outside color. I said before, it ends up this darker color after gluing. Mauve #1172 HO Fine ballast around the ties minimizes the visual width of the right-of-way. The ties were lightly weathered with shades of weathered black, gray and brown to avoid the plastic look.

Lower Track: Mainline with Elevated Roadbed

For this purpose, a 1/4″ Homasote roadbed from the California Roadbed Company was employed. Micro Engineering’s code 83 flex track was selected for the mainline, known for its durability and realistic appearance. The ballasting technique for the lower track involves the use of two colors of ballast. The outside ballast color is #1152 Basalt (Empire Builder), which, when glued, results in a darker hue that enhances the track’s visual depth. Around the ties, Mauve #1172 HO Fine ballast was applied to minimize the visual width of the right-of-way, creating a more focused and streamlined look.

The ties on the lower track were lightly weathered using shades of weathered black, gray, and brown. This weathering technique reduces the plastic appearance of the ties, giving them a more natural, aged look that blends seamlessly with the surrounding scenery.
